Why no Indian Meryl Streep, by Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan: 'Give me a platform where you present my point of view, not as part of your agenda. I will speak'

What Meryl Streep spoke about at the Golden Globe Awards is related to what’s happening in the US, something she believes in, and has a comment to make. Before any journalist starts comparing, is there a similar situation here that you want me to speak about? No. If there is a situation that is different, I am sure people who want to speak will speak differently.

I found it very odd that all the journalists started saying “when will Indian actors start speaking like this?” Why would Indian actors speak about a situation that does not exist? If there is an agenda and situation you want us to speak on, then you ask us about it and, obviously, we do speak.

I would like to turn around and ask: Why don’t journalists here behave the way their counterparts do in the West? You see journalists asking pointed questions to presidential candidates fearlessly and with facts. If the other person interrupts, they would stop and say, “It is his time”.

Here, I want to tell the journalists that it is not your time, so can you please keep quiet. Can I listen to those two people you are asking questions to? Now, there are two journalists on the TV screen and both are talking over each other and the panelists, sitting there, are not talking. It is a strange space…

Recently, I have developed an issue. I am not complaining, I am part of this. Somewhere down the line, if you have a point of view and a very strong one, you need to directly tell me: “I am doing this piece on you. Shah Rukh, would you like to comment, pro or against? Would you like to take a side on this point of view that I have?” I might say that I agree with you, so I would like to make this statement. Or, maybe, I would say no, I don’t agree with what you are saying and you can go ahead and put it in your story. Every interview has become an editorial…

You may write a piece from the point of view that I am doing three back-to-back Muslim characters. With due respect to my professionalism as an actor, I did not even know what my name was in Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. I just went for two hours, did some shots and had fun with my friends, Karan, Ranbir (Kapoor) and Aishwarya (Rai Bachchan). I wrapped up around 2 am and partied till 6 am before flying back to Lisbon.

Don’t create a point of view. These are films which were postponed for two years. I would still like to believe that in this day and age, an artist is there to put across entertainment in the best way he or she thinks is possible. We don’t hold the audience responsible or at gun-point that they have to like every movie and point of view.

So, why is it that somewhere down the line, in this race of being the first ones to inform or to be the first ones with a certain point of view, media uses other people? Have the dignity to ask: “Are you with me?” We can both talk about it… Or, are you always going to utilise snippets, bytes, pieces and words to somehow bolster your point of view?

After Meryl Streep’s speech, asking me why Indian actors are not doing the same is weird. It is like asking me suddenly why I am not playing golf like Tiger Woods. I appreciate what she said and think it was very brave of her to say that in an event organised by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Our actors do speak. So do our actresses, filmmakers, producers and journalists.

But the bottom-line is, you’ve got to speak to people who understand what you are saying. More than the platform Streep used for speaking, she had the platform where people understood what she said… Like I have said before, journalists are not used to stardom — theirs as well as celebrities’. Suddenly, everybody looks better, does better make-up and the anchor is the star of every show. The editor is the star of every snippet. Everybody writes an article with a picture. Everybody is trying to lose weight, look nice. When I was seven years into stardom, I used to behave like this.

I am waiting for mediapersons to get over their wonderful, newly-gained stardom. I am friends with most of them and really want to ask them: Why do you want to join the bandwagon of faceless people on social media who just want to say a thing and become famous? You don’t need to do that. You are someone who used to present the point of view of people, so that I can take your opinion, other people’s opinion, and decide what’s happening around the world. You are the first source of knowledge about what’s happening…

Meryl Streep is the woman I love the most in this world. I believe singing is God’s gift. Acting is something that can be crafted, learnt and trained in. If there is one actor who is gifted by God in acting, it is her. She is in a space where she has the right to talk about it.

Why would you say that I wish Indian actors spoke like this? Can I say I wish Indian journalists presented me like that too? Is that fair? Give me a platform where you present my point of view, not as part of the agenda you have in your storyline. I would speak — I always did, I always will. Something happens somewhere and I am not even aware of it.

People start questioning why Shah Rukh Khan is not speaking. If something is not affecting me or I have no knowledge about it, I am allowed to remain silent. If I don’t want to talk about an issue, does it make you less aware or less of a person?… There is so much noise otherwise. There are days I don’t want to add to that noise, don’t want to be a hashtag. Sometimes I need space to find out what has happened and then decide if I want to comment.

By the time I find out, the moment is gone. I know my voice matters. I would like to say it at the right platform, space and express my ideology. I don’t want to be part of this hashtag trend.

There are a lot of idiots who will also start speaking up since you are asking them to. Believe me, you don’t want to hear them. As it is, there are so many people on social media. There used to be a “save power day”, when you kept lights off for some hours. Similarly, for three hours, people should not tweet or retweet and just relax.
These are edited excerpts from an interview to Alaka Sahani of ‘The Indian Express’ given last week. Here, Khan replies to the question: ‘Following Meryl Streep’s Golden Globe Award speech, there was a lot of talk about Indian celebrities, especially Bollywood personalities, not speaking up. Please comment.’ Full text of the interview will appear in ‘Eye’, the Sunday Express magazine, dated January 29First Published on: January 25, 2017 12:31 am

It seems earthiness of Shah Rukh’s character has connected with the audience while Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s turn as a cop is also getting a lot of appreciation. After Parzania, Raees is Rahul’s one big commercial film. Talking about the prep that went into it, the director said in a recent interview, “Five years of life. I have done nothing else during this period. I rarely go to parties. When I did and the host asked who are you bringing with you? I used to say: ‘I am bringing Raees’. The research of the movie, its writing, location scouting, production design and shooting had taken over my life.”

Shah Rukh Khan arrives on train in Vadodara to promote Raees; one dead

Fans in Vadodara swarmed the railway platforms to see the star. However, shortly after the train left, the crowds rushed towards the exit, causing a near-stampede

BY: EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE | VADODARA |Updated: January 24, 2017 12:27 Am

One person died and another was left critical on the crowded Vadodara railway platform, teeming with fans of actor Shah Rukh Khan, who arrived on board the August Kranti Express on Monday to promote his upcoming film Raees. While the actor did not step down from the train, choosing to wave at the crowds and urged them to watch the film on a loudspeaker, fans in Vadodara swarmed the railway platforms since several hours before the scheduled arrival of the train.

Farid Khan Sherani, in his late forties, had arrived at the railway platform with his wife and daughter as the family was an avid follower of the actor. However, shortly after the train left, the crowds rushed towards the exit, causing much chaos and a near-stampede, in which several persons, including Sherani, collapsed. Sherani and one other man were rushed to nearby hospitals, while other suffocated people were helped by police personnel and passersby.

Sherani, who was rushed to a private hospital in Vadodara, was declared dead on arrival. Sherani was a known figure in the old city area of Vadodara and affiliated to the Samajwadi Party. He had also contested the civic elections in 2005 on a SP ticket, sources said. Among other businesses, Sherani ran a dormitory near the railway station.

Shah Rukh Khan’s visit to Vadodara was much publicised to gather the crowd as the actor announced on social media sites about his travel plans from Mumbai to New Delhi on board the August Kranti Express. The train, which arrives in Vadodara shortly after 10:15 pm every day, was running late by a couple of minutes. While fans could barely catch a glimpse of the actor, cricketers Irrfan and Yusuf Pathan got a special opportunity to meet the actor, as the film’s promotional team escorted the cricketers into the compartment to meet the actor, later sharing pictures of the two embracing the Raees star.

Two constables of the Railway police also collapsed during the chaos that ensued after SRK’s visit. The constables are undergoing treatment at SSG hospital and are said to be out of danger.

Several other persons were wounded and left bleeding during the near-stampede.

Shah Rukh Khan has set some ground rules for his boys, that are quite surprising but impressive.

Shah Rukh Khan is not only a brilliant actor but also a best father to his sons, Aryan and AbRam

Mumbai: Recently, Shah Rukh Khan spoke his mind on many social issues, from feminism to women rights to raising his children. In an interview with Femina India, the actor talked about his boys, Aryan and AbRam. Also, he didn’t shy away from calling himself a conservative man but he’s got a point to be one.
"I’m bringing up my sons to treat all as equals; as boys, they will have no extra privileges over girls. Sometimes I’m a bit conservative. I believe that a man in his house doesn’t have the right to go shirtless in front of his mother, sister or women friends. I tell Aryan to put on a T-shirt all the time.”

On questioning about his harsh disciplines at home, the man brilliantly replied, “How would Aryan feel if his sister Suhana came out without a T-shirt? If you’d feel uncomfortable seeing your mother, daughter, sister, women friends without their clothes on, why would you expect them to accept you shirtless? It’s got nothing to do with having breasts or not—don’t do something a girl can’t do.”

We appreciate your thoughts, Shah Rukh, which will definitely echo among your fans

Shah Rukh Khan on Raees vs Kaabil clash: It's unfortunate but there was no other date!

Pramod Gaikwad January 18, 2017, 02.13 PM IST

The impending clash between Shah Rukh Khan's Raees and Hrithik Roshan's Kaabil at the box office on January 25, is currently the hot topic of discussion in the tinsel town. The makers of both the films made several attempts in shifting the release date of their films to avert the big box office clash but it was all in vain. While Rakesh Roshan called Raees' release strategy as unethical, son Hrithik said that it was unfortunate and it would be a loss of almost INR 100 crore. Shah Rukh Khan, who had maintained silence over the issue till now, has finally spoken about the impending clash. He said that he tried his best to shift the release date of Raees but there was no other date.

"The businesses now will get shared. But then again, we don't have too many theatres to accommodate two big films, as yet. If there were another 1000-1200 theatres more, it would be all right. But two films coming on the same day individually won't earn as much as they would have. That's logical. But there's no other date, yaar! I have tried my best to shift it around. We were initially supposed to come on Eid in June, then I tried to get it in September-October, but Ae Dil and Shivaay were coming. Then I tried to come on December 9, but Befikre was coming. In between, I had Dear Zindagi, too. So, unfortunately because of the delay and my injury, it is what it is now. Otherwise, even if we had come on Eid, it would have still clashed with Sultan. There are 200 films and just 52 weeks, so then some will have to come together. It's unfortunate but a few years from now, when the number of theatres increase — which I hear is already in process — and if we reach another 1,200 screens, two films coming on the same day won't be a problem anymore," Shah Rukh Khan said in an interview with DNA.

Earlier, both the makers of the film tried to avert the clash through several discussions but Rakesh Roshan was not letting his foot slip and was firm with his decision. While, the Roshans tried to take full advantage of the republic day week to gain the upper hand at the box office, the makers of Raees counterfeited their decision and planned a worldwide release of their film on January 25, straight from morning shows.
Directed by Sanjay Gupta, Kaabil is a revenge drama wherein Hrithik plays the role of a blind person, while Rahul Dholakia's directorial, Raees is an action-crime thriller wherein Shah Rukh Khan plays the role of a ruthless don Raees Alam.

Karan talks his secrecy with SRK, a must read

Karan Johar with Shah Rukh Khan's youngest son AbRam

Karan Johar's biography An Unsuitable Boy continues to make news, whether its for KJo opening up about his sexuality or spilling the beans about his rift with Kajol. The Ae Dil Hai Mushkil director is extremely close to Shah Rukh Khan, who he considers an "older brother," and is even protective of SRK's kids, Aryan, Suhana and AbRam.

In his biography, he writes about his parental feelings towards them. "I go to Gauri's house now to play with AbRam. Even if Gauri is not there, I go and sit and him. And he comes and spends time with my mum all the time. My mum loves him. He is like a toy that you want to own. He came to the office the other day and the entire staff came out to see him. Everyone was behaving as if Brad Pitt had arrived. He was delighted with all the attention."

Karan also opened up on the rumoured rift between him and SRK. "Shah Rukh is a very possessive friend. I think I may have hurt him when I made a film without him. And I think I got hurt because when I did, I felt he didn't give me that paternal or fraternal feeling that I had from him otherwise. I think we were two hurt friends for no reason."

He revealed that the "simmering silent distance" between them went out of the window when they met at the success party of Piku. Karan wrote, "I hugged him instinctively and said, 'I've missed you.' And he said, 'You've no idea how much I've missed you.' We had this moment." He also added that "when the origin of the friendship is so strong, it just cannot die."
